We see three major purposes for an introductory PASSING workshop.
First, the workshop is extremely useful for “personal values engagement.” The workshop challenges us to examine our personal values as they relate to the lives of persons with impairments, and other groups, that struggle for a valued place in our society. Not only is it likely to be helpful on a personal level, it will help you understand the impact of the values driving our society, and organizations and agencies within our society.
The second purpose of the workshop is to inform you in a systematic way about the breadth and scope of Social Role Valorization (SRV), as developed by Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger. The advantage of this event is that it greatly deepens, organizes and refines both the gravity of the concerns which SRV addresses, as well as the multitude of specific implications it contains. Furthermore, PASSING consists almost entirely of team work, discussion and visits to actual services. In this way, it provides a rich practical dimension which nicely counterbalances the lecture aspects of a leadership development SRV workshop.
The third purpose of the overall event is to familiarize the participant with the basic uses of the PASSING instrument. This tool is being used worldwide for teaching about SRV. It is also used for planning, evaluation and study of the impact of services on individuals receiving the services, at least as this relates to the ability of the service to obtain and maintain valued social roles in their communities for the individuals they serve.
